With 27 years of logistics industry experience, Nexus has not lost sight of its next generation of leadership.
Nexus Distribution announced the development of a Nexus Leadership Council (NLC) at its company-wide Open Book Management meetings this March.
Nexus designed the NLC to develop and cultivate its leadership talent. The Council will provide a forum for colleagues across different business functions to discuss emerging issues, 3PL industry trends, ideas, and best practices. Its mission will be to strengthen relationships among leaders and to provide development opportunities for the company’s best and brightest.
“We call them the ‘New Breed’ here at Nexus,” explains Dean Hansen, founder and CEO. “The NLC was born because these are the people who will be running the company some day. We want them to establish a bond, to share ideas with each other, to start digesting our business challenges now, today.”
NLC membership was offered to Nexus team members employed on a full-time basis who currently have, or aspire to have, leadership, management, or supervisory responsibilities within the organization.
To join, applicants were asked to complete an application and write a brief essay describing the nature of their interests and qualifications. Essays will describe what each candidate hopes to gain by becoming a member, and he or she hopes to contribute both to Nexus and to the Council. These responses will help further define the mission and the vision of the Council.
Council members will gather in a variety of settings to partake in team building activities, workshops, brainstorming sessions, and paneled discussions. Once per year, Nexus will sponsor a presentation given by a visiting expert. The company will host a national conference for all NLC members to share the year’s events and lessons. At this meeting, council members will be given the opportunity to influence the following year’s strategic and financial goals.
“This concept is rather innovative for a company of our size, in our industry,” explains Letty Spiak, Director of Human Resources. “We are extremely proud of this project actually. It shows that we are willing to invest in our people, our greatest asset. They are the future of this company.”
